SMS delivery reports

How do I get SMS delivery reports on giffgaff?

Turning on delivery reports on giffgaff isn’t as easy as just activating the setting on your phone. This is because they run on the O2 network which isn’t fully set-up for automatic delivery reports. Don’t fret though – it’s still perfectly possible to use them when sending messages.

To get a delivery report when sending a text, simply type *0# at the beginning on the message. You don’t need to leave a space afterwards and it won’t show up when the other person receives the message. You don’t even need to have delivery reports activated on your handset.

What are SMS delivery reports?

SMS delivery reports are status notifications you can request that let you know whether or not a text you’ve sent have been successfully received yet or not. They simply gives you a message on your phone when a text you’ve sent has arrived.

Why are delivery reports useful?

The problem with texts is that after they are sent you have no way of knowing whether they’ve got through properly. Sometimes people have their phones turned off (maybe they’re at the cinema or out of battery) and you can be waiting for a reply without knowing whether or not it’s come through yet or not. SMS delivery reports are great because they tell you exactly when the text has been delivered. That way you can be sure it’s gone through okay and you also know if, for whatever reason, a text hasn’t arrived yet.

Do they work with any network?

Yes, delivery reports will work no matter which UK network you’re texting.

Won’t the recipient see the symbols?

No. The *0# is a special code used on O2‘s systems to activate delivery reports. It’s automatically edited out before the text is sent. The person you’re sending the message to will not see it at all, just what you wrote after. For this reason, it’s not even necessary to include a space afterwards.

Does it cost any extra?

No, unlike some networks, delivery reports are completely free on giffgaff.

Is there a way to automatically always have delivery reports?

Unfortunately not. However, you might find it useful to create a text template that already includes the *0# so you don’t have to type it every time.
